How to run team chat on a small server

What a small cloud server can host, and what to watch.

The short answer

A small cloud server, around two CPU cores and 4 GB of memory, is a reasonable starting point for a team of a few dozen people. This is an estimate, not a benchmark.

Set up

Pick a server

Use the server sizer for a starting point.

Install Dock

Node plus one SQLite file.

Add HTTPS

Put a reverse proxy or tunnel in front.

Turn on backups and 2-step login

Then invite your team.

What to watch

Disk space as files grow, and memory during large meetings if you do not use a media server.

Questions

Do I need a GPU?

No.

How do I back up?

Use the daily backups and copy them off the server.
